Tennis Elbow Treatment

If you have been playing a racquet sport for any length of time, whether it be tennis, badminton squash or racquetball, eventually at some point you are going to get tennis elbow. Even many golfers suffer from tennis tennis elbow treatmentelbow. It is very common.

So what is tennis elbow, why do you get it and what can you do about it? Tennis elbow happens when when you have a problem with the tendons that are attached to the outside of your elbow. These tendons are attached to the muscles that are used to pull your wrist back. It tends to happen with repetitive motions and use of the area, such as when you are playing tennis and swinging the racquet, or swinging a golf club. Don’t think that just athletes and racquet sports players are the unlucky benefactor of this condition. Anybody that uses repetitive motions with their hands, including painters, carpenters and gardeners also suffer from this condition.

Doctors believe that this is not just an inflammation of the tendons that cause this condition, but rather a degenerative process which occurs when there are tiny microscopic tears in the tendons that are not completely healed.

The pain that is associated with tennis elbow is not pleasant thing because it is painful in varying degrees, and also if you are an avid tennis or squash player such as I am, the down time from playing the sports that you love can be very aggravating and painful in itself. Athletes and sports players need to participate to be happy and sitting on the sidelines even for a short period can be aggravating, at least to me.

So are there any solutions to this condition and what can you try? Look, we are not medical professionals here, just enthusiastic sports participants. There are a number of medical treatments that doctors can resort to for chronic and severe tennis elbow, treatment such as surgery, injections or shock wave treatment.

There is also a lot of new research on the role of strengthening exercises for tennis elbow. I personally would look into this type of treatment before trying anything more radical. You can always go the more radical route as a last resort. You can also try the various tennis elbow bands and tennis elbow straps before your condition gets worse. I know a lot of people who will not play without a tennis elbow strap in order to prevent from getting tennis elbow.

The important thing is to catch it early. If you start to feel that you are getting tennis elbow pain, stop playing before you do more damage and it gets worse, and try some strengthening exercises.
