Tennis Socks

tennis socksWhy does a simple subject such as tennis socks have to be such a complicated subject? After all, we are only talking about tennis socks here, not a life threatening issue. It seems to me that every issue nowadays has to become complicated, a lot more complicated than it really needs to be.

There was a time not too long ago when the word cotton was the keyword. Cotton socks, cotton shirts, cotton dresses, you get the point. Then for some peculiar reason, cotton became  not a dirty word, but a word that was well, a fabric of the past. Remember the late 70′s , John Travolta, the Bee Gees and Saturday Night Fever? Polyester became the “in” fabric and cotton was regulated to the back of the bus so to speak. Everything was polyester from your head till your toes until people started realizing that the polyester generation, although it didn’t wrinkle would cause you to sweat to death.

Leave it up to American ingenuity to almost convince the public that cotton was a fabric of the past. They really had us going for a while. The big textile mills and their new invention were going to radically change the way we dress. Wash and wear with no more ironing.

So, what does all of this cotton polyester talk have to do with the subject of tennis socks, and why am I even discussing it? That’s a good question, and honestly speaking I don’t even know the answer. Maybe I just like old fashioned regular tennis socks made out of cotton, just as I like to wear cotton shirts and pants etc. I prefer personally, for my tennis wear and tennis socks included to be cotton. But I’m, call me old school. I like natural fabrics and cotton tennis socks to me are a natural fabric. My regular socks are cotton socks, so why shouldn’t my tennis socks be the same material?

Now some of my tennis playing partners have a different opinion. A lot of them are wearing these other type of tennis socks composed out of Acrylic. Supposedly, tennis socks made out of acrylics have better air circulation and the fibers in those type of tennis socks reduce the chance of blisters due to better moisture wicking. I’m not convinced that my feet need better air circulation but it’s probably true. Manufacturers such as Nike, Thorlo,Drymax,Adidas and Wilson all make a brand of tennis socks with these newfangled fibers. I’m sure it works better than my old poly leisure suit from circa 1979. That was a portable sauna. But, I do have a solution for you if you still like the regular old fashioned kind of tennis socks. Pack a couple of extra pairs of tennis socks in your bag and change them in between sets. I’ve always believed that you can never bring along too many pairs of Tennis Socks to a match.womens tennis socks
